Tech Tip

of the Month!

Making QR Codes

The EASIEST way to create a QR code from a website is to use the share button in the Omnibox (address bar) and click “Create QR Code.”  From there, you can either copy/paste the QR code or download it to your Google Drive!  Need a video or pictures with visuals?  Check out this link: Control Alt Achieve: Making QR Codes with Chrome  The great Eric Curts does it again with a short how-to video and/or step-by-step instructions with images!  Eric even gives ideas for how to use QR codes with Chromie Homies and in schools in general.

I’ve had some others ask for QR code makers where you can change colors and even add images.  Here are the two I have used successfully:

  • QR Code Generator - powered by the bit.ly website, this generator allows you to create QR codes for URLs (websites), pre-made text messages, emails, join wifi networks, or even go to a social media account! You can change the shape, color, and add a logo.  Be aware, some of the features require a login.  You can create an account with your personal email if you’d like, but I just use this site without logging in.

  • QRCode Monkey -  This site does many of the same as above, but it is completely free and doesn’t require a login.  You can add your own images as logos to the center of the QR code AND change the colors.  Below, you’ll see a QR code that goes directly to my YouTube channel!  Notice my fun bitmoji in the center!  Just be aware that when you download the QR code, an advertisement will pop-up and may ask you to log in.  The site uses ads to generate revenue.  You just need to be patient and the image will eventually download!

Techie Trojan Alert!

Congratulations!

Homer’s very own
Michelle Mahoney
has completed the steps to become a Seesaw Pioneer and then a Seesaw Ambassador!

Pioneers go above and beyond the Seesaw basics by completing training and joining the Seesaw Community Learning hub.  The only way to become an Ambassador is to first complete your Pioneer certification and then be invited personally by Seesaw to complete the Ambassador training.  Then, you must complete a much longer training to earn your Ambassador title.

Great job, Michelle!  We are so very proud of you!

ChatGPT, Chatbots, and Artificial Intelligence in Education

By Matt Miller

Have you heard about ChatGPT?  Chatbots?  What about Artificial Intelligence?

If you haven’t heard about any of these three, PLEASE read this article and see what is coming.  ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence assistant trained by artificial intelligence to help answer questions and provide information on a wide variety of topics.  Basically, you ask ChatGPT to answer a question, and it does.  It will write entire essays, songs, poems, and more.  It also isn’t able to be tracked by plagiarism sites like Turnitin.  Please read this article to understand what this means for education moving forward and how you can adapt.

Computer Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts save you time and improve your daily computer life!  There are so many that it can be overwhelming.

Most people know that Ctrl + c is copy and
Ctrl + v is paste, but did you know about the magic combo of Ctrl + z?  It is the undo button and it works across platforms!  It even has its own bitmoji!

Besides the undo shortcut, the other popular one that people love is Ctrl + Shift + T which opens the last closed tab or window.

Want more cool shortcuts?  Check out this blog post from tcea (Texas Computer Education Association) https://bit.ly/3XNNM
