Tech Tip

of the Month!

2 Factor Authentication

Hopefully, everyone saw Josh Finn’s email about turning on 2FA for our school.  In layman’s terms, this adds another layer of protection to your email account.  When you log into a new device with your password, Google will reach out to you to make sure it is actually you.  Even if a hacker has your password, they cannot log in without using this second piece of information.  This is helpful to protect the privacy of your school email.  If you want to protect your private email, you can turn on 2FA for that, as well (always a good idea!).

Gmail App for mobile devices

If you are interested in reading your school email on a personal device, you will need to install and use (if not already) the Gmail app.  Gmail is free, secure, and fast.

Resource for All!

When we have new staff members at HCSD, we give them a packet on all things technology.  At the tech department, we wanted to make sure the information we are sharing is comprehensive and complete.  The NEW STAFF TECHNOLOGY PACKET for 2023 has been completely reformatted and redone!  By using our “Start Page” as a guide, each section tells what a link is, how to access it (even if you’re not at school to use the Start page), and who to contact if you need help.  Check it out! Gen Z workers are not tech-savvy in the workplace –
and it's a growing problem
  By WorkLife.News

I’ve heard it over and over…  “Students should know how to do this!”

I agree with you, they should.  But, who is responsible for teaching them?  If you expect your students to use technology efficiently and effectively, then it is up to us!  Students as young as Pre-K can be learning the skills to make them tech-savvy and safe online.

My favorite quote from this article is,  “The assumption is that because Gen Z and even millennials spend a considerable amount of time on technology that they are technology savvy,” she said. “This is a huge misconception. Sadly, neither watching TikTok videos nor playing Minecraft fulfills the technology brief.

Not sure where to start?  I can help!  Please let me know if you’d like to brainstorm.  We can look at teaching students email, writing documents, creating and using databases, video creation, and more!  Don’t forget my resources for students and Gmail!  This can be used from 3rd grade and up!

*- Slow Reveal Graphs is an instructional routine that promotes sensemaking about data.  This highly engaging routine uses scaffolded visuals and discourse to help students (in K-12 and beyond) make sense of data. As more and more of the graph is revealed, students refine their interpretation and construct meaning, often in surprising ways.

The site has pre-made Google Slides that slowly reveal the data so you can engage your students in creative and critical ways to analyze the data.  It is super cool!
