Tech Tip

of the Month!

TipChange Notifications from Google Classroom

Students from grades 3 all the way up to grade 12 have access to their HomerPride email.  They are allowed to send and receive emails within our domain (@homercentral.org and @homerpride.org) only. This seems like a great way to contact students but many of them complain that their inbox is inundated with notifications from Google Classroom and they don’t know how to stop it.  I’ve also had staff tell me they don’t know how to change the notification preferences.  Well, I’m here to help!

To begin, this is the entire support article that goes through how to do this from your computer, android phone, or iPhone/iPad.  If you just want the gist, follow along with me here!

Teaching ‘Digital Native’ College Students Who Understand TikTok — But Not Microsoft Excel

By Lilah Burke via EdSurge

Quote from the article, “Though today’s young people have gained a reputation as ‘digital natives,’ that doesn’t always translate to having the digital skills that are needed to succeed in college.”

This article was written with a focus on higher education, but since we pride ourselves on making students “College and Career Ready,” I think this piece can speak to all of us.  It gives us something to think about when we assume all students know how to use technology (spoiler alert:  They don’t!).

Google Experiments

From Google Arts & Culture, these different experiments encourage creativity, test your knowledge, and let you play with music and sound!  Here are just a few of my favorites:

  • Blob Opera - Create your own opera songs by dragging the blobs or go on tour with the Blob Opera and listen to them play different songs from around the world.

  • In Rhythm with Nature - Greate meditative sounds and visuals of the botanical world

  • What came first? - Quiz your knowledge on what came first in the world!  This includes people, events, and even architecture.

  • Fine Art Coloring Book - Use digital colors to fill in beautiful fine art photos and pictures.
