Digital Citizenship Month

October is Digital Citizenship Month!

At Homer Junior High School, Mrs. Gray's Applied Skills classes are working hard to research what it means to be a good digital citizen.  Mrs. Gray used different resources to help guide her 6th graders in the right direction.  She used the curriculum from Common Sense Media.  She also worked closely with our Library and Media Specialist, Mr. Seymour to present students with the CRAAP test which teaches how to evaluate online sources.

Students then created posters on how to take care of their Chromebooks.  Our school is lucky and we are 1:1 Chromebooks but sometimes the kids need reminders on how to take care of them.  These posters were posted around Mrs. Gray's classroom and about the school.

Other resources Mrs. Gray used to help the 6th-graders were:

When Mrs. Gray was done with the direct instruction segment, she decided to put the kids in charge!

The students' task:  Create a digital citizenship presentation to be shared with younger students.

This presented another hiccup in the plan.  Many of the 6th graders had never created a Google Slides presentation before!  There was a presentation about how to use Slides, how to present well, and finally, how to personalize their slide show.  She told the students they needed a minimum of 5 slides that were simply and clearly presented about how to be a good digital citizen.   When the students were done, she invited the 3rd-grade classes (and me!) in to watch presentations!  To say I was excited was an understatement!

Students did a wonderful job.  They created presentations that were created in Google Slides but included videos, animations, music, and even fun games (Kahoot!).  The kids focused on many topics, but mostly included:
  • Internet Safety
    • don't share personal info
    • don't talk to strangers
    • make your passwords strong
  • How to be a good digital citizen
    • stop cyberbullying
    • be kind online
    • how to report things
  • Useful strategies for using technology
    • take breaks
    • limit cell phone usage
    • follow age-restrictions on social media
I was very impressed with the 6th-graders' abilities to collect, put together, and present applicable information for the littles.

I'll leave you with photos of the presentations. What a great way for kids to show their learning!
